Community Autonomy: memory and possibility. The struggle of commoners Ostula against the dispossession of their lands.
Introduction:
The June 29, 2009, hundreds of men and women indigenous Nahua community Ostula, located in the town of Aquila in the state of Michoacan, came of his community nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains of southern bound for the Pacific Coast to retrieve a territory of about one thousand hectares that were being robbed by a small group of chiefs of the village adjoining mestizos La Placita to the inert gaze political authorities of the state. In this place today have given the name Xayakalan.
Residents of Ostula, supported by its neighbors in the towns of Coire and Pómaro decided that day to generate a break in the historical hegemonic trajectory based on the looting and the inability of the political institutions to resolve these problems. So, exercising their right to self-based in forms of community self-organization, through which historically have been regulated, they are making to protect their heritage and creating a future of hope for their children and grandchildren.
